The GammaWatch Basic is a sensitive radiation detector inside a light digital watch.

In default mode, both the current time and radiation dose rate is displayed. The unit returns to default mode within 60 seconds of inactivity. That way, a user can not accidentally push a button and not be able to return to default mode.

The GammaWatch Basic features a revolutionary algorithm that allows it to alarm the wearer immediately when a dangerous level of radiation is encountered. Yet, it is sensitive enough to measure slight changes in the level of background radiation. This is accomplished by automatically adjusting the response time to the radiation level and keeping the accuracy constant. The higher the radiation level, the quicker the unit will respond.

In addition to the digital readout, four icons "NORMAL", "ELEVATED", "HIGH" and "DANGER" provide an interpretation of the radiation level encountered. The lower level icons remain on when a higher level of radiation is encountered. In other words, when the radiation level is normal, only the "NORMAL" icon is shown. However, when the radiation level is high, the "NORMAL", "ELEVATED" and "HIGH" icons are shown. This means the icons also act as a bar graph analog  indicator of the radiation level.

The GammaWatch Basic can display: dose rate (radiation level), accumulated dose, time and date. The unit has a daily alarm, a dose rate alarm and a accumulated dose alarm.
